Australian players will be nervous and excited as the TotalEnergies BWF World Championships begin today in Copenhagen, Denmark. The best players from around the world will battle it out in all five disciplines over the next SIX days for the honour of being crowned a world champion; a sought after title in 2023 just under a year away from the 2024 Olympic Games.
There is a mix of experience and youth in the Australian contingent of six players as they continue their quest to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games. The team has been preparing at local club in Denmark for the past week.
Experienced singles player Nathan Tang is the first Australian player on court on day 1 of the Championships in his round of 64 match against Chico Auro Dwi Wardoyo (INA) who has a world ranking of 21. Also playing on day one will be Gronya Somerville and Kaithlyn Ea in the Women’s Doubles where they are up against Scotland’s Julie MacPherson & Ciara Torrance in the round of 64.
Day two will see Tiffany Ho face Turkish player Neslihan Arin who recently made it to the quarterfinals of the 2023 European Games with the winner to play second seed Akane Yamaguchi ((JPN) in the second round.
Kenneth Zhe Hooi Choo & Ming Chuen Lim, who both played with a different partner at the Oceania Championships earlier in the year will play Ireland’s Paul Reynolds and Joshua Magee in the first round of the Men’s Doubles with the winners to play the in-form second seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy & Chirag Shetty (IND).
Birmingham Commonwealth Games silver medallists with a current world ranking of 32, Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith (ENG) are the first round opponents for Oceania Mixed Doubles Champions, Kenneth Zhi Hooi Choo & Gronya Somerville, who are currently ranked 48.
