Saipan, Monday 1 July 2024 – The CROWNE PLAZA Northern Marianas Open 2024 is set to ignite the courts of Saipan, bringing together talented players from various parts of the world. The tournament takes place from 2 -7 July 2024, at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. As excitement builds, the tournament organisers are thrilled to announce the official draw for the upcoming week of thrilling matches and showcasing top-tier badminton in the Pacific. Our Oceania players from Guam, New Zealand and the Northern Marianas Islands will have the opportunity to compete against athletes from outside our region, gaining valuable experience by facing a broader array of international opponents than they are used to.
Men’s Singles: The men’s singles draw features a blend of emerging stars and seasoned players, highlighted by Edward Lau (NZL), the 2024 Oceania Men’s Singles Champion, who is poised to continue his winning streak, and Kuo Kwan Lin (TPE), the 2022 Men’s Singles World Junior Championships winner, looking to make his mark on the senior circuit. Another standout is Viren Nettasinghe (SRI), one of the youngest players in the world to secure direct qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Women’s Singles: Riko Gunji (JPN), in exceptional form with recent victories and runner-up finishes in her last three tournaments, is a key player to watch in women’s singles. Her consistent performance sets the stage for exciting matchups as she competes against international talents.
Men’s Doubles: The men’s doubles category is set to showcase a thrilling competition with Japan securing the top three seeds. The draw features strong challengers from various countries, eager to create upsets and advance through the tournament.
Women’s Doubles: Kim Hye Jeong (KOR), ranked number 3 in the world in 2023 with her former partner, now teams up with Kim Yu Jung. Their new partnership will be under the spotlight as they aim to establish themselves as a formidable duo on the international stage.
Mixed Doubles: The mixed doubles category sees Edward Lau (NZL) returning to the court with Shaunna Li, following their runner-up finish at the 2024 Oceania Championships. Their dynamic partnership will face tough challenges from other top pairs from Japan, Chinese Taipei, and Thailand, making for an electrifying competition.
