Badminton Oceania is very fortunate to have received invitations, through the Oceania Paralympic committee for three of our countries to attend a Para badminton youth training camp to be held at the Korean Paralympic Committee Training Centre in Incheon, Korea from 14 – 22 November 2023. This exciting opportunity for players under the age of 22 years was extended to two players and one coach from Australia, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.
This is an amazing opportunity for the young Para badminton players from these countries to travel out of our region to experience different training methods and styles and to be emersed into another culture for the eight days they are in Korea.
Australia is represented by Lachlan Boulton and Arika Shetty who played in the VICTOR Oceania Para Badminton Championships and Western Australia Para Badminton International in October of this year. Led by Coach and President of Badminton Fiji, Joe Gibson, the two players who will represent their country are Bonebati Teruka and IL LY Ilisapeci Rokosauturaga.
Due to visa and aircraft mechanical issues, the Papua New Guinea contingent have been delayed and will arrive later this week, and will join the training camp upon arrival. The player who has been chosen to attend is David Joe Kaniku, who attended the VICTOR Oceania Para Badminton Championships in 2020 which was held in Ballarat, Australia. The second attendee is coach Brian Karo who was also the coach of the Papua New Guinea team that attended the 2020, 2022 and 2023 Oceania Championships.
