Leanne Choo has been appointed the new badminton Head Coach for Australia.
Choo, who represented Australia at the London 2012 Olympic Games and Rio 2016 Olympic Games, as well as the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games and Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, was appointed following a thorough recruitment process.
This appointment aligns with the strategic direction and funding provided by the Australian Institute of sport for player development focused on those that have the best chance for podium success for the 2028 Los Angeles and 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games.
Badminton Australia President Andrew Greenway acknowledged Choo’s selection.
“On behalf of the Board, I congratulate Leanne on her well-deserved appointment,” said Greenway.
“The selection process was about identifying the right coach at the right time with the right skillset to take this squad on a journey of success, and Leanne’s appointment was on the back of her ability and an assessment of her skillset.”
“She is strongly passionate and has demonstrated her ability to build a compelling vision for the future of high-performance badminton, along with a culture of mutual respect and dedication.”
Badminton Australia CEO Jamie Parsons echoed Greenway’s comments, noting that Choo’s dedication to the sport of badminton was instrumental in her selection.
“Leanne has been involved in badminton as a player and coach, and this appointment sees her dedication and enthusiasm to the sport continue,” said Parsons.
“The selection panel could see these qualities in all aspects of her application, and the sport looks forward to seeing Choo bring her vision and passion to the court in this new role.”
For Choo herself, this new opportunity represents a chance to see badminton grow in all aspects, while developing a positive and strong team culture for all involved.
“I am honoured to be appointed to the role of Head Coach for Badminton Australia and look forward to the opportunities and journey ahead,” said Choo.
“First and foremost, I love badminton and have both played and coached it, so there is a deep passion for the sport. We have a fantastic group of athletes and coaches, and I’m excited and looking forward to working with them all.”
“There are a number of incredible competitions coming up in the next few years, and we’ll be looking to produce athletes who are ready for the next part of their sporting journey, while creating a positive and supportive culture for all.”
Choo was also a coach for Australia at the Uber Cup held earlier this year in Bangkok and is the Australian Head Coach for the Australian Under 19 Team who competed in the recent Trans-Tasman Challenge 2022 and is currently in Spain for the BWF World Junior Championships 2022.
She will begin her appointment as Head Coach upon her return to Australia in December.
