The VICTOR Oceania Championships has once again attracted an unexpected high entry. In 2024 when the Championships were in Geelong, Australia there was a larger than anticipated Australian entry; with the Championships moving across the Tasman for 2025 to North Harbour, New Zealand it was thought that the entries would be similar to 2023 when they were last held in New Zealand, however this is not the case.
In 2025, the men’s singles has 94 entries, five more than in 2024 and 50 more than in 2023.
Australia is sending a whopping 61 players across the “ditch”, coming close to New Zealand’s entry of 63.
With the two largest countries having the monopoly of entries, the Pacific Island member associations are ensuring their players are part of this annual tournament including a first ever entry from the Solomon Islands. Bernie Guan, who is currently studying in Christchurch will be Solomon Island’s inaugural player, leading the way for future players from his country.
In total, seven member associations will be attending the Victor Oceania Championships 2025.
Returning to defend their titles in 2025 are the men’s and women’s singles champions: , Edward Lau (NZL) and 2024 Olympian Tiffany Ho (NZL)
The men’s doubles title will have new champions as the 2024 winners are not playing this year’s tournament. The 2024 women’s doubles champion partnership of Setyana Mapasa and Angela Yu sees only Angela defending the title, who will now pair with experienced Australian campaigner, Gronya Somerville.
Gronya, who won the 2024 mixed doubles title with Kenneth Choo, now retired, will play with New Zealand’s Vincent Tao, hoping to once again take top spot on the podium.
Preceding the Individual Championships is the VICTOR Mixed Team Championships, with five countries playing for the right to represent Oceania at the TotalEnergies BWF Sudirman Cup finals in May.
VICTOR Oceania Mixed Team Championships: 10-12 February
