The Sydney International 2023 is showcasing some up-and-coming international badminton talent to keep an eye on in the future.
Garret Tan (USA) is just 15 years old and competitively keeping up with players who are many years’ his senior. Playing this week at the Sydney International 2023, he has turned heads when playing. Tan recently played at the BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championships as part of team USA. After finishing second in pool play, his team continued their winning ways in stage two until beaten by Korea. Team USA finished a respectable 10th place.
The USA team, a member of Badminton Pan America, continued their success at the BWF World Championships 2023 (individuals) in Spokane, Washington. Francesca Corbett and Allison Lee were runner up in the women’s doubles to winners Maya Taguchi/Aya Tamaki (JPN).
Tan who has a current men’s singles world ranking of 337, travels to badminton tournaments with his mother, who also doubles as his coach and manager. He recently reached the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Junior Challenge 2023 and attended the All England Junior Badminton Championships 2023 where he was a semifinalist in the men’s singles and champion in mixed doubles with compatriot Ella Lin.
The USA junior program is developing talented players that are performing exceptionally well on the world stage. With the possibility of representing their country when the USA host the 2028 Olympics in Las Angeles, the continued development of junior badminton players will be the ones to watch in the future.
