After a raft of promotions into the qualifying draw, the opening session was dominated by Australian players looking to progress further, with many of them successful.
Two Oceania mixed doubles pairs started the qualifying session with positive results, winning their prospective matches to advance to the main draw. Adrian Reynardi and Victoria Tjonadi together with Rizky Hidayat and Joyce Choong will feature in the first round of the mixed doubles on day two of the SATHIO GROUP Australian Open 2023 with good wins.
Ying Tse will play Aya Ohori (JAP) in the first round of the women’s singles after a close three game match in qualifying earlier today. Also having to pull out a big match to qualify for a main round position was Kai Qi (Bernice) Teoh who will play Yvonne Li from Germany.
Ricky Tang was the sole Oceania player in the men’s qualifying draw to progress further, beating fellow Australian Jacob Schueler. He will now meet Zhao Jun Peng (CHN) in the first round of the main draw. Nathan Tang is the only other Australian in the main draw of the men’s singles.
Promoted to the main draw before the tournament began, Jack Wang and Ryan Tong had a big first up match against the number one seeds, Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto (INA). It was a good lesson learned for the Kiwi players who will take away vital experience from their international appearance.
A further three Oceania men’s doubles pairs had the chance to impress. Kanki Igawa and Raymond Tam tried everything in their power to stem the dominance from Kim Gi Jung and Kim Sa Rang (KOR), however this was not to be. Allen Fang and Michael Su struggled against the number two seeds from Malaysia, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, who never looked in doubt of a quick win.
Rizky Hidayat and Frengky Wijaya Putra had their vocal fans on the edge of their seats as the Australian pair took the number six seeds to a third game. The Indonesian pair of Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin seemed to sense the possible upset and stepped up the attack to take the win. Rizky Hidayat’s campaign is not over, making another appearance in the mixed doubles on day two.
Setyana Mapasa and Angela Yu had a well fought match against Hung En-Tzu and Lin Yu-Pei (TPE). They will play against Rui Hirokami and Yuna Kato (JAP) in the main draw. Australians, Gronya Somerville and women’s doubles partner, Kaitlyn Ea were not pushed in their qualifying match against Ying Tse and Jasmine Wong (AUS), who had been promoted to qualifying from the reserve list. Somerville and Ea will now come up against Linda Efler and Isabel Lohau (GER) in the main draw.
The Tjonadi sisters from New South Wales had a close win in their qualifying match which now sees them up against another sister act; Benyapa Aimsaard and Nuntakam Aimsaard (THA), who won a BWF World Title at the India Open in 2022.
