Quarter finals day has not disappointed the large crowd at the SATHIO GROUP Australian Badminton Open 2023.
Many of the big names and seeds are still in the draw, competing for a chance to play on finals day. Women’s singles players Beiwen Zhang and Ratchanok Intanon had little trouble against their opponents, convincingly booking their places in Saturday’s semifinal.

- Ratchanok Intanon (THA) vs Supanida Katethong (THA) 21-13 21-14
Further entertainment came in the form of two fantastic men’s singles matches. Crowd favourite, Lee Zii Jia had his fans in full voice in his match against compatriot Ng Tze Yong (MAS). Ng came out of the gates with determination and held his nerve to take the first game. Lee fought back to win the second in extension, taking the match to a third game. With the crowd seeming to carry Lee along, he won the third and deciding game to take the win and a ticket to the semifinal.
Number one seed, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting had entered the quarterfinals after a strong win against Kiran George, who had come through draw from qualifying. Up against another player from India, Prannoy H.S, the pressure was on from the beginning. Ginting won the first however could not withstand the constant pressure today.

Over in the men’s doubles the big upset of the day was the match that featured Lu Ching Yao and Yang Po Han (TPE) and the second seeds from Malaysia. Even though the Malaysian pair were in the hunt for most of the match, they were unable to hold back the onslaught from the Chinese Taipei pair.

Meanwhile, the women’s doubles continued to mostly follow the seedings. The Aimsaard sisters could not penetrate the strong performance of Kim and Kong from Korea, while the Japanese pair of Fukushima and Hirota had an impressive win in three games against their compatriots.
