From humble beginnings to international recognition, the Northern Marianas Badminton Association (NMBA) has shown that passion and dedication can lead to remarkable achievements. Shortlisted for their “TakeCare Public School System Interscholastic Badminton League” in the prestigious BWF Membership Grant Impact award, their journey is a testament to the power of perseverance.
Making strides in promoting badminton within their community, the NMBA continues to build on the success of their award-winning Interscholastic Badminton League. This program, which earned them the 2023 BWF Member Association Participation Award, has continued to thrive, encouraging middle and high school students to stay active and adopt healthy lifestyles through badminton.
NMBA has extended its efforts beyond local initiatives by establishing a junior national training squad. Players have gained invaluable experience and exposure through international competitions like the U15 and U17 Pacific Invitation Team Challenges.
Under the leadership of Merlie Tolentino’s, the NMBA organised two successful Grade 3 International Challenge tournaments in 2023 and 2024. These events attracted players from over 15 countries and increasing badminton’s visibility in the region.
NMBA is now gearing up for more exciting events in Saipan. This June, VICTOR Oceania Junior Championships and the inaugural Northern Marianas International tournament will bring top U19 players from the region. The goal is to offer them a pathway to gain experience on the international stage.
While the NMBA did not take home the award this year, their nomination is a testament to their ongoing commitment to the sport and their community. Their efforts are paving the way for a promising future for badminton in the Northern Marianas.
