AUSTRALIA — Two new Grade 3 tournaments will land on Australian shores this November. The South Australia International and YONEX Melbourne International will provide more opportunities for players to play world ranking tournaments in our region this year.
After a several-year hiatus, international badminton will return to Adelaide, in the form of the South Australia International. The Grade 3 International Series tournament will run from 11-15 November, offering $10,000 USD in prize money.
“We are very excited to host the SA International this November at The S.A. Badminton Arena,” says Simon Oaten, Chair, Badminton South Australia. “Badminton is a sport showing sustained growth in South Australia, and this event will provide a showcase for the sport and an opportunity to demonstrate Badminton South Australia’s dedication to its place and future in the state.”
The YONEX Melbourne International will follow at MSAC, Albert Park as a Grade 3 Future Series event from 18-22 November, with $5,000 USD in prize money on offer.
Clint Proctor, CEO, Badminton Victoria, says the tournament is a key initiative within the organisation’s new strategic plan and reflects its ambition to continue growing the sport.
“Our focus is on creating more high-quality playing opportunities and delivering the very best experiences for our Victorian athletes, while also attracting leading national and international players to compete on our courts,” Proctor says. “The Melbourne International is another strong example of the rapid growth of our sport and the clear appetite that exists to play, compete and be part of badminton’s future. We’re proud to be building momentum and showcasing Victoria as a premier destination for badminton.”
With these two tournaments added to the BWF calendar, Oceania now offers six Grade 3 tournaments: four International Challenge, one International Series, and one Future Series tournament.
“For our emerging athletes, access to more world‑ranking events close to home is absolutely critical,” says Tjitte Weistra, CEO, Badminton Australia. “It allows them to gain international experience earlier, compete against a broader field of players, and accelerate their development without the significant financial burden of extensive overseas travel. Badminton Australia extends its appreciation to South Australia and Victoria for their commitment to delivering these events.”
The addition of new tournaments is a testament to the growth and capabilities of the sport in our region. As the appetite for badminton continues to expand, creating these pathways is essential to supporting our players as they progress toward elite competition.
“Now we have eight international tournaments available in our region this year, ranging from a World Tour 500 to a Grade 3 Future Series and including the Oceania Championships,” says Julie Carrel, Secretary General, Badminton Oceania. “We are strengthening the pathway for our players and creating opportunities for them to pursue success on the world stage. We are appreciative of the hosts of these tournaments and enjoy working with each one in partnership to deliver quality tournaments.”
