Oceania’s reigning Women’s Singles champion has been preparing for an upcoming month of intense competition in India.
Hsuan-Yu Wendy Chen is looking to qualify for her second Olympics Games after competing in Rio 2016. The singles specialist is competing in the 2019 YONEX Canada Open and US Open over the next month and is balancing her studies and competitive career with the unique opportunities such as training at the Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sporting Excellence in Bangalore, India.
“My trip to Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sporting Excellence in Bangalore India had a dual-purpose : university workplace exchange and badminton training. It is always intriguing to see how different countries run training programs. The coaches there were very welcoming, and I participated in the trainings there for a week“

Wendy will also be competing in the Mixed Doubles with Australia’s Mitchell Wheller. The pair were promoted from the qualifying to the main draw and will take on the powerhouses from Korea in the first round of the Mixed Doubles.

They will also be joined by the regional champions, Simon Leung and Gronya Somerville, in the first round of the Mixed Doubles. The pair currently stand at 102 in the world rankings and a successful run in Canada could take the Ozzie duo back into the world’s top 100.

Both players will also compete in the Men’s and Women’s doubles with their respective partners. Gronya and Setyana Mapasa will be looking to continue their steady rise through the world rankings as they chase Olympic qualification, while Simon is joined by Mitchell Wheller against strong Japanese opposition.
