The whirlwind journey continues for Australia’s golden girls, Gronya Somerville and Setyana Mapasa.
A series of career highs and lows which included victories in Europe and Pan-America and career-threatening injuries have struck their performance in recent years. Yet Australian power duo, Gronya and Setyana, are leaping through the world rankings.
Around this time last year, the pair had plummeted to world number 200. However, a string of victories at the regional Championships, late round exits in BWF International Series and HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300 events, 100% success rate in the TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup and most recently, winning the 2019 Yonex Canada Open has seen them climb to number 36 in the world (as of BWF Rankings on Tuesday 23 July 2019).
“We are super pumped to be feeling good and injury free and to be back playing some great badminton”, says Gronya.
The recent results are promising signs for the Aussie duo ahead of next month’s TOTAL BWF World Championships 2019.
The pair will compete in the Women’s Doubles, with Gronya also competing in the Mixed Doubles (with Simon Leung) at TOTAL BWF World Championships 2019 take place from 19 – 25 August 2019.
