Keith Edison chases Oceania Tour prize while Chinese Taipei seize control of the Women’s Singles and Doubles in Perth

The second day ended with the round of 16 across all five disciplines as the Quarter-Finalists are decided at this year’s Perth International 2019.

Last week’s Champions from the Australian Junior International in Melbourne opened proceeding with an emphatic victory over their Australian opposition. The 17-year-olds put the shuttle away with ease, taking the match in just eighteen minutes.

• Chen Zhi Ray/Cheng Kai Wen (TPE) vs Alan Lau/Chun Wah Yau (AUS) 21-4 21-13

In tomorrow’s Quarter-Final, they will face world record holder (for the fastest smash), Commonwealth Gold Medalist and ex-world number one, Tan Boon Heong. The Malaysian second seed is partnered with the younger Shia Chun Kang, who comfortably won their opening game.

Kiribati’s Teitiria Utimawa celebrated her second victory in her first BWF event in the Women’s Doubles match, alongside Tinabora Tekeiaki. However, the pair soon got a taste of some extraordinary Asian talent as they were knocked out in the round of 16 by the Chinese Taipei’s fourth seeds.

Two of Australia’s top singles players teamed up to form a Mixed Doubles partnership, succeeding in both rounds to make tomorrow’s Quarter-Finals

• Jacob Schueler/Louisa Ma (AUS) vs Oswald Fung/Michelle Ting (ENG) 21-14 13-21 21-13
• Jacob Schueler/Louisa Ma (AUS) vs Kai Chen Teoh/Kai Qi Teoh (AUS) 21-19 21-18

However, Schueler wasn’t so fortunate in the Men’s Singles. The Australian missed out on a spot in the Quarter-Finals, as did some of Oceania’s Women’s Singles seeded players.

• Huang Chien Tzu (TPE) vs Tiffany Ho (AUS)[7] 21-9 21-15

Meanwhile, Australia’s Keith Edison has lived up to his seeded expectations with another convincing victory under his belt to book his Quarter-Final spot. His result in Perth could prove to be pivotal in his success on the Oceania Tour.

As far as the Women’s Singles and Doubles draw goes, Chinese Taipei have completely dominated the draw, meaning an all-Chinese Taipei final is already guaranteed by the end of day two.

The Quarter-Finals begin at 10am on Saturday 7 September 2019.
