The quarterfinals of the SATHIO GROUP Australian Badminton Open 2025 lived up to every expectation. With thrilling match-ups across all disciplines and spots in the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals on the line, there was never a dull moment in the QuayCentre.
Men’s Singles
One of the most experienced players on the circuit, Chou Tien Chen (TPE) faced the rising talent, Alwi Farhan (INA) in the first match of the day.
The veteran trailed throughout the first and second games, and Farhan looked ready to wrap up the match quickly, reaching 20-15 in the second game promptly.
Instead of shying away, Chou stared down the prospect of defeat. In a stunning display of pure grit, the Chinese Taipei player went on a scoring spree to even the score at 20-all. Visibly shaken by Chou’s rise from the depths, Farhan struggled to regain control of the game. Chou forced a third and then continued his rampage to take the match.
Final score 13-21, 23-21, 21-16.
“I kept making errors, and it was difficult to get points,” Chou said. “So when I was 20-15 down, I just tried to focus, have faith, and really attack.
“I’m so happy because many people are here. I tried to encourage them to not just cheer for me but to [get involved in the match]. They trust me to win points and win matches, so I really appreciate them.”
The other men’s singles semifinalists are:
- Lin Chun-Yi (TPE)
- Lakshya Sen (IND)
- Yushi Tanaka (JPN)
Women’s Doubles
Today was filled with breakthrough performances for all of our women’s doubles winners, as all four pairs will make their Super 500 semifinal debuts tomorrow.
Most notably, the pair from the United States of America qualified for their first semifinal on the entire World Tour Circuit.
“When the last bird hit the ground and it was out, it was relief and a lot of happiness because it’s a tangible result of our hard work,” said Jennie Gai, one half of the winning duo.
She has only been playing with her partner, Francesca Corbett, since the beginning of the year, and they were hungry for a breakthrough.
“Our progress has been a little bit slow but steady,” explained Corbett. “I’m really happy that we could have a better result than earlier in the year.”
They will be joined in the semifinals by:
- Ririna Hiramoto/Kokona Ishikawa (JPN)
- Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma/Meilysa Trias Puspitasari (INA)
- Rachel Allessya Rose/Febi Setianingrum (INA)
Men’s Doubles
Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri are now one step closer to their goal of securing a spot the HSCBC BWF World Tour Finals. In order to book their ticket, the Indonesian pair needs to make it to the finals of the SATHIO GROUP Australian Badminton Open.
Their win against number one seeds, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty (IND) in today’s quarterfinals will keep their Hangzhou dreams alive for at least one more day.
They will face compatriots Sabar Karyaman Gutama/Moh Reza Pahlevi Isafahani in tomorrow’s semifinal.
The other semifinal features:
- Ramond Indra/Nikolaus Jaoquin (INA)
- Goh Sze Fei/Nur Izzuddin (MAS)
Mixed Doubles
Tension and excitement were at an all-time high in the mixed doubles, with two of the quarterfinalists in a race to land the last spot in the HSBC World Tour Finals.
First up, Ruttanapak Oupthong/Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat (THA) took to the court for their semifinal bid.
The pressure was on, but Oupthong/Sudjaipraparat rose to the occasion. With a spot in their first World Tour Finals on the line, they were in a prime position to shift the pressure and force the other pair vying for a spot to chase them.
The Thai pair cruised through their match, comfortably securing their spot in the semifinals.
The only remaining question was whether Jafar Hidayatullah/Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu (INA) had an answer to the challenge laid before them.
And have an answer they did. Over 78 demanding minutes, the Indonesian duo were tested by Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Bøje, but eventually, they came away with the win.
Oupthong/Sudjaipraparat and Hidayatullah/Pasaribu will face each other tomorrow in the ultimate test for both a spot in the ABO final and the HSBC World Tour Finals.
The other semifinalists are:
- Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei (MAS)
- Pakkapon Teeraratsakul/Sapsiree Taerattanachai (THA)
