PORT VILA, VANUATU — With a population of just over 300,000, Vanuatu is home to stunning landscapes and adventure activities galore. And now, following a decision from BWF this past week, it is also officially home to the world’s newest badminton Member country.
This significant milestone marks Vanuatu Badminton Association‘s official recognition as the 18th Member of Badminton Oceania.
Between the quick formation of VBA and the delivery of a Shuttle Time course by BOC staff, Dhanny Oud and Sam Kreutzer, thanks to the BWF New Member Grant, badminton boomed in the archipelago over the last year.
For members of the community, Shuttle Time has proved to be a new way to keep fit and connect with others.
“I am very interested in the training because it has helped me learn many new things in a short time. As a para, I have gained valuable skills and knowledge that I am eager to put into practice. I am also motivated to share what I have learned with others by training them, so that we can all grow and improve together.” – Jacklynda Molidu, Para badminton player and ST Teacher.
The focus for VBA in the short term is to continue spreading the sport through community and school programs.
“[We] will be able to continue supporting the Shuttle Time program in Vanuatu along with the great work that Augustine [Yalou] and Mathias [Boe] have pursued in bringing badminton into schools in Vanuatu” – Pam Ryan, VBA Treasurer and ST Teacher.
Badminton Oceania is excited to support Vanuatu Badminton Association in growing and developing the sport in country and creating pathways to support the growth and participant experience.
