Thousands of people have picked up a badminton racket today as part of the inaugural World Badminton Day celebrations.
A total of 199 official registered events from 60 countries were planned, giving people and communities an opportunity to experience fun and inclusive badminton for the first time.
While the events ranged in size, location, and focus; the common theme was to celebrate and promote badminton for all.
BWF President Poul-Erik Høyer thanked the badminton community for getting involved.
“World Badminton Day provides a unique opportunity for us to simultaneously celebrate and promote the sport we love by encouraging more people to pick up a racket,” said Høyer.
“It’s been fantastic to see so many people getting involved and trying badminton.
“We are very proud that badminton is an inclusive sport for all, and I’d like to thank all our Members, partners, players, coaches, and volunteers for being part of this celebration.
“We hope that through flagship projects like Shuttle Time and AirBadminton that participation numbers will continue to soar.”
It was over 87 years ago, on 5 July 1934, that the International Badminton Federation (now BWF) was founded.
In recognition of this significant date, and to make this a day of celebration for badminton globally, World Badminton Day will now be held every 5 July.
