31 Oceania players/pairs have been promoted to either the main or qualifying draws of the SATHIO GROUP Australian Badminton Open 2023. After several withdrawals spanning five events, there were some unexpected, but pleasant surprises for players from down under.
In the men’s singles, eleven Australian players made the move from reserves into the qualifying draw, while five women had the same elevation. Several match ups between Australian players will be more of a national competition but in an international environment.
The men’s doubles qualification draw has now been eliminated due to the number of withdrawals which has resulted in a New Zealand pair and four Australian pairs being promoted to the main draw. Ryan Tong and Jack Wang (NZL) will make the most of their international experience when they play the number one seeds, Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto (INA). Meanwhile Australians Allen Fang and Michael Su have the exciting opportunity to play against second seeds Aaron Chi and Soh Wooi Yik (MAL).
Two Australian mixed doubles pair have been promoted into the main draw. Kenneth Choo and Gronya Somerville will be relishing the chance to progress when they play Lee Chun Hei Reginald and Ng Tsz Yau (HKG) while Rayne Wang and Angela Yu will have to wait until qualifying is complete before they know who their opponents will be.
Play begins on Tuesday 9.00am local time with qualification draws. Main draw men’s and women’s doubles commences at 4.00pm.
