On day 1 of the LI-NING BWF World Junior Championships in Canada, we saw mixed success in the men’s and women’s singles events throughout the morning and Oceania’s mixed doubles pairings have been in action throughout the afternoon.
Ryan Tong and Ella Smith (ranked 357/143 respectively) from New Zealand secured a second-round place with a fantastic win over Santiago De La Oliva Alzamora and Stefany Ying Chie Chen Chen (460/380) from Peru. They will now face Chen Shiau Cheng/Wang Yu Qiao (325/1493) of Chinese Taipei on Wednesday.
More success came in the form of Ryan Venpin and Kaitlyn Ea (1400) from Australia who comfortably won their match against Finland’s Jonas Djurhuus and Sissal Thomsen (1416) 21-4 21-8 to set up a second-round clash against Armando Gaitan and Jessica Jazmin Bautista Trigueros (418) from Mexico on Wednesday.
The mixed double’s knockout has already proved how strong the level of competition is, with some close contests from our Oceania pairs who have been knocked out in the first round:
