Three players from Oceania celebrated a spot in the second round in the VICTOR Welsh International 2019 following a tough day of competition.
Competing in their final round of the Men’s Singles qualification, Australia’s reigning National Champion was ousted from the draw by the third seed Austrian, while Adam Dolman managed to overcome the eleventh seed Canadian to secure a spot in the main draw.
- Wolfgang Gnedt (AUT)[3] vs Jacob Schueler (AUS)[9] 21-6 21-15
- Adam Dolman (AUS) vs Antonio Li (CAN)[11] 21-15 15-21 21-11
Dolman joined a number of players from Australia and New Zealand in the main draw, where the first seeds in the Mixed Doubles (Leydon-Davis and Pak) set the pace with an emphatic win in their opening match.
However, Anthony Joe became the only other player to join them in tomorrow’s second round following his opponent’s retirement through injury.
- Oliver Leydon-Davis/Anona Pak (NZL)[1] vs Sam Smith/Serena Midha (ENG) 21-6 21-9
- Anthony Joe (AUS) vs Kari Gunnarsson (ICE)[8] 21-23 15-9 Retired
Dolman’s main draw opener proved too strong as the fourth seeded Englishman stormed through to victory.
Australia’s Louisa Ma suffered an agonising loss in a nail-biting game against her Norwegian opponent. The pair were rarely within a couple of points to each other, across three long games, where Emilie Hamang eventually sealed the win.
New Zealand’s Leydon-Davis also teamed up with Abhinav Manota to form the second seeds in the Men’s Doubles. The pair managed to recover from one game down to bring the score back level, but a surge of points in the latter half of the final game saw the Chinese Taipei opponents surge to the finish line.
