In one of the first tournaments of the year, the PERODUA Malaysia Masters 2019 has kicked off the badminton-fuelled year ahead.
The HSBC BWF World Tour Super 500 event takes place from 15 – 20 January 2019 at Kuala Lumpur Sports City in Malaysia and we saw the doubles pairing of Gronya Somerville and Setyana Mapasa from Australia competing in the women’s doubles event.
In a match that was a repeat of their gold medal triumph in the YONEX Dutch Open 2016, the Australian duo fought valiantly but eventually went down in two sets against the eighth seeds and Bulgarian sister pairing of Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva 21-15 21-18.
With the VICTOR Oceania Championships 2019 only just around the corner, Somerville and Mapasa have been quick to gain some international experience on court before they look to defend their two-time women’s doubles titles.
