The Australian Para-Badminton International 2018 started at 9.30am local time at Leisuretime Centre in Geelong, Victoria.
In the opening round, we saw the first seeds in the Mixed Doubles SL3 – SU5 classification, Toshiaki Suenaga and Akiko Sugino live up to their seeding. The Japanese pairing comfortably secured a first round win against the mixed nationality pairing of Anand Kumar Boregowda (India) and Caitlin Dransfield (Australia) 21-10 21-12.
“We had an advantage as it was the first time our opponents were playing together. We played the game tactically but we know we will have to change up our approach in the upcoming matches as we come up against other established pairs” – says Toshiaki.
Meanwhile, homegirl Celine Aurelie Vinot paired up with Englishman James Binnie to play in the first round of the Mixed Doubles SL3 – SU5 classification against compatriots Phonexay Kinnovong and Zashka Gunson of Australia.
“It was great to win our first match on home soil. It’s my first time playing with James but it was a good experience. I am looking forward to the next challenge” – says Celine.
Gunson, at 12 years old, was playing in her first international Para-Badminton tournament:
“For me this event is very nerve-racking because I’ve never really played internationally…but it was good to have doubles as my first game as I wasn’t alone” – says Zashka.
Gunson’s positivity and enthusiasm was evident throughout and we’re positive that the youngster will enjoy many more experiences in badminton.
