The Northern Marianas Sports Association (NMSA) has named Merlie Tolentino the Administrator of the Year. This award celebrates her exceptional leadership and her efforts to grow badminton in the region.
Tolentino is the President of the Northern Marianas Badminton Association. She also sits on the Board for Badminton Oceania and has been vital in growing the sport, especially for youth and school players. After the territory hosted the 2022 Pacific Mini Games, she used that momentum to grow badminton in junior programs. She has worked hard to create new chances for athletes in the islands. Key initiatives include the development of competitive pathways that empower young athletes, such as the NMI Elite National Training Program.
For Tolentino, this award represents something greater than herself.
“Winning the Administrator of the Year award is truly an honor—not just for me, but for badminton in the Northern Marianas,” said Tolentino. “I’m incredibly proud of our team at NMBA, as this achievement reflects our shared dedication to promoting the sport and encouraging a healthy, active lifestyle in our community. This award belongs to everyone who works tirelessly to grow badminton in the NMI!”
Under Tolentino’s leadership, the Northern Marianas Badminton Association hit major milestones. In 2024, they won the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Participation Member Association Award. Tolentino helped organise two successful Grade 3 International Challenge tournaments in both 2023 and 2024. These tournaments attracted players from over 15 countries. As a result, badminton gained more visibility in the region.
Tolentino is gearing up for more thrilling events in Saipan. This June, fans can look forward to the VICTOR Oceania Junior Championships. They can also enjoy the first-ever Northern Marianas International tournament. These events will bring in top U19 players from the region and offer them a pathway to gain experience on the international stage.
This recognition reflects Tolentino’s deep commitment to both the sport and the local community. She inspires athletes with her vision and leadership. Her passion for badminton helps the sport grow in the Northern Marianas.
“It hasn’t always been easy, but the challenges never stopped me because I’ve always believed that badminton will one day become a mainstream sport in the NMI,” said Tolentino. “Seeing the sport grow and create opportunities for young athletes is what keeps me motivated every day.”
