Australia received the Badminton World Federation (BWF) award for excellence for Promotion of Badminton at the 2022 BWF Annual General Meeting held in Bangkok Thailand last night.
The awards are designed to showcase excellence and promote best practice across the world. Australia was up against other finalists including the Netherlands, Bahrain and Barbados.
The award is for the work done in 2020 by the badminton community when it embarked on a whole of sport rebrand that included a new logo for Badminton Australia & all States and Territories, established a new brand / team name for the Australian National Team the Australian Badminton Falcons and an official tagline for the sport – “Let’s Play”.
Accepting the award Badminton Australia CEO Jamie Parsons said “Being awarded the Promotion Award from BWF is something that the whole Australian badminton community can be proud of. The award is recognition of the hard work that all in the community in Australia is doing to promote and grow badminton.”
Parsons went onto say: The collaborative approach to a change in brand for badminton in Australia was driven by badminton leaders. I am extremely proud and pleased to take this award home to Australia and looking forward to all the exciting growth the badminton community is developing to continue to build on this momentum.
As well as the over 500 people that contributed to surveys, focus groups and provided feedback – Badminton Australia would like to say a big thank you to the State & Territory badminton organisations and in particular those involved in the working group including Anthony Mackasier (WA), Matt Johnson (SA), Michael Chen (NSW), Rick Wolters (WA), Tristan Clow (QLD), Vikram Varma (ACT) and Matt Simpson from the Badminton Australia office. A huge thank you to the team at Night & Day, particularly Scott Booth, for all of their hard work on developing the brand, content and website, without their input we would not have a brand so strong without their dedication.
Badminton has participation rates that place it in the top 5 sports in the world and had one of the highest levels of Olympic social media engagement at the 2020 Olympic Games. To receive this award when badminton is growing across the world is an outstanding achievement.
