SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — Badminton Oceania is proud to celebrate one of our region’s most dedicated servants, David Turner, who was presented with the Badminton World Federation Meritorious Service Award on Sunday, 14 June at the SATHIO GROUP Australian Badminton Open in Sydney Olympic Park.
The BWF Meritorious Service Award is one of the highest honours in international badminton, recognising individuals whose dedication, leadership and commitment have made a lasting contribution to the sport. David was nominated by Badminton Australia in recognition of his extraordinary service to badminton in Australia — a career spanning more than five decades that has also left a significant mark on Badminton Oceania and the wider international community.
Five Decades of Service
For David, badminton was always a family affair. His father was Australian champion from 1958 to 1966 and a Commonwealth Games representative; his parents won the Australian mixed doubles together. By the age of 14 or 15, David had followed them into the sport, representing Tasmania and beginning a journey that now spans 53 years as a player, coach, administrator, international umpire, educator, and most recently, an assessor.
A career music teacher by profession, David credits his background in education for much of his success as a mentor.
“The teaching skills that I have have helped my communication,” he says. “In my workshops, I work one to one with people — it’s how I speak with them, how I can inspire them to keep going.”
Ask what has kept him in the sport so long, and his answer is simple: “I love the sport, but the answer now is simply the people. I like badminton people.”
Shaping Oceania’s Officials
David currently serves as the Chair of the Umpire Panel, part of the Badminton Oceania Training and Assessment Panel, helping shape how officials are developed and promoted across the confederation. The depth of that work was on full display at the Australian Open, on the very day he received his award, one of his long-time Tasmanian mentees, Vicky Zhang, was out on court umpiring a tournament final.
“Here you see her umpiring a final? How wonderful is that?” he says. “It’s all remarkably rewarding. How lucky am I to have been involved with it?”
A Richly Deserved Recognition
Receiving the award in front of his colleagues at the Australian Open made the moment especially meaningful.
“It’s very humbling,” David says. “To have been recognised 40 years of official work locally, nationally and internationally. To receive it here, in front of my colleagues was very meaningful. I’m really delighted.”
David plans to continue in his international role and remains a passionate supporter of Oceania badminton. His advice to aspiring umpires is straightforward: “Put it in for the long haul. It takes time to build the skills, but the rewards are so hard to believe. You never know where it might take you in this world.”
On behalf of the wider Badminton Oceania community, we sincerely congratulate David Turner on receiving the BWF Meritorious Service Award.
