Australian badminton player and Falcons member, Jacob Schueler is feeling more comfortable than most on the day preceding the VICTOR Oceania Individual Championships.
Having the Continental Championships in his hometown of Geelong takes a lot of pressure off the singles specialist who has a current world ranking of 167. Speaking of his week ahead playing in the individual tournament and then followed by the Men’s Team event where he will represent his country, Schueler is looking forward to ‘no travel, sleeping in his own bed and eating at his own home’ during the coming days. He is happy that people get to experience Geelong in summer as it lends to that relaxing lifestyle, but only when the competitiveness of the competition is over.
Leading up to the VICTOR Oceania Championships, the Australian Falcons have been in a training camp at their home base, MSAC. Schueler explained that having Chinese Taipei players visiting to spar against had been beneficial in the lead up to this week’s event. ‘I have been working on defense as there are many players with strong attack. We have been playing a lot of matches, a lot of points and having intense game play. It puts you into a competitive mindset.’
The VICTOR Oceania Championships combines three events over seven days (Open Individual, Men’s Team and Women’s team). The winning team from each of the men’s and women’s team competitions will represent the Oceania region at the upcoming Thomas and Uber Cup Finals in China between 28 April and 5 May 2024.
