The journey to VICTOR Oceania Individual Championship glory began today, and the competition was fierce.
With more entries than expected, it was clear that every player was determined to make their mark.
While no upsets shook the tournament, the matches were undeniably intense, with the hopefuls on display refusing to hold back. From the first serve to the last point, it was clear: the battle for the title is just getting started, and every player came ready to give it their all.
Favourites Fare Well
Number one seed, Edward Lau cruised through his first men’s singles match of the tournament, beating his Australian opponent comfortably.
Edward Lau (NZL) def Cheuk Hei Lau (AUS) 21-10, 21-6.
Australian Ricky Tang, also looked relaxed in his singles match. The third seed dominated from the outset showcasing both skill and confidence to prove why he’s a top contender in the tournament.
Olympian Tiffany Ho made an explosive start to the competition. From the very first point, the Australian was in complete control, reminding everyone why she is the number one seed.
Tahiti Triumphs in Early Stages
Although Australia and New Zealand dominated the first round fixtures, Tahiti carved a three-person stronghold in the men’s singles division.
Remi Rossi, after carrying a small injury earlier this week, returned to form to take down Australia’s David Wang,
He joins fellow Tahiti teammates, Antoine and Louis Beaubois and in the round of 32 tomorrow.
Both Antoine Beaubois and Rossi also fought to advance to the next round of the mixed doubles.
Rossi, with Heirautea Curet, pushed the kiwi duo of Joseph Wu and Coco Zhu to their physical limits. The Tahiti team was too powerful for the New Zealand pair, Rossi and Curet came away with a 21-17, 18-21, 21-10 win.
Beaubois paired with Esther Tau to face Toby Smith and Xue Lin of New Zealand. Holding their ground, Beaubois and Tau snuck away with a 21-16, 21-19 victory.
Beaubois made it a three-peat to also advance to the round of 32 in the men’s doubles with his partner, Yann Jeandroz.
