It always helps to have a passion for the sport that a Technical Official chooses to Umpire in – hence why Sidney Galos has deservedly been achieved BWF Accredited status.
Since attending a two-day umpiring course in New Zealand back in 2010, Galos has progressed through the ranks, and gone on to represent Oceania at various local and regional events, with a handful of international invitations too. The opportunities to mingle with like-minded individuals at international badminton competitions, while watching the fastest racket sport in the world from the “best seat in the house” keeps him motivated.
Much to Sidney’s delight, the new accreditation opens a whole new world of opportunity, with potential to represent Oceania at future Olympic and Paralympic Games, the BWF World Championships, the HSBC World Tour Finals and many more.
“I have mixed emotions – mostly relief and excitement: relieved that my hard work pays off, I have never felt so much pressure in any assessments before; excited for this new stage of my umpiring career as this is of limited time to be involved in the highest level of this sport”, says Sidney.
Talking of his journey through the ranks, Sidney has had to learn how to balance the demands of work, social life and playing badminton himself.
“The different responsibilities were not easy to balance, but I strive to do it with passion and energy. To succeed I had to persevere and be open to criticism”
“I built my umpiring career over time as it does not come naturally and quite challenging at times”
Luckily, Galos acknowledged the family of technical officials around the world, allowing for reflection and learning from other experienced umpires.
Badminton Oceania is excited to watch Sidney represent at tournaments around the world and progress on his journey as a BWF Accredited Umpire.
