PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

Player Development is the backbone of our sport in an ever-changing and developing climate to give players opportunities to develop and achieve their goals to be the best they can. Badminton Oceania aims to progress operation structures and framework to enhance player pathways while working to assist Member Associations representation in the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games and world events of importance. Our Player Development programme has a direct correlation to our Coach education programme as high-quality coaches and high-quality players go hand in hand.

Badminton Oceania’s Player Development programme is a 4-Tier programme aimed primarily at under 23 (U23) athletes where Member Associations needs are addressed on an individual basis according to the development of the sport in their country.

4-Tier Programme

AIM

To prepare junior athletes from the Pacific for their first international badminton experience at a level where they can compete with other badminton players in the same age group and with similar ability.  From all past experiences, AIMS Games is the start of the international pathway with players from the Cook Islands, Samoa and Tonga all going on to compete in Oceania Championships and World Junior events.

AIM

To prepare junior players from selected Pacific Island countries for a higher level, structured training environment than what is available in-country and build a progressive and positive training culture linked with tournament experience. Players in this programme will be invited to participate as a member of the BOC Pacific Development Squad.

AIM

To develop eligible Pacific Island Open athletes to a level where they can compete regionally and work towards an Olympic or Commonwealth Tripartite position. BOC will work with athletes and their coaches in this programme to develop an individualised training and tournament programme suitable to meet the tripartite criteria and enhance their opportunities to be selected for available spaces.

AIM

To prepare and develop players from the Pacific towards competing at international junior competitions. These competitions may include Oceania Junior Championships and World Junior Championships.

AIM

BEC Scholarships to give athletes an opportunity to train at the European Centre of Excellence in Denmark. These scholarships have criteria set by the BWF and are targeted towards singles players.

AIM

To develop players to an international standard and give them experience to train with and compete with top level badminton nations with the goal of looking ahead towards YOG, Pacific Games and Commonwealth Games. To create role models within countries to push the game to a higher level and inspire junior players to strive for success.
